contd :- -2- are markedly light. Some of the bodies being supplied with the 20 HP. give a car weight unladen of over 35 cwts., this naturally kills performance. On every side, however, larger engines and lower gear ratios are being provided in the class which competes with the 20 HP. The new 25 HP. Sunbeam has a displacement of 3,619 c.c. and a top gear ratio for covered cars of 5 - 1. Braking tests were also carried out in which the Phantom shewed up very well, when three passengers were carried in the back. Otherwise, due to the light type of body fitted, there was insufficient weight over the back axle to promote satisfactory adhesion of the rear wheels. The new rear spare wheel carrier will undoubtedly do something to remedy this complaint. We are of the opinion that 10-EX car with its present compression ratio, new lightened engine and axle, and altered sporting body would have put up a better performance than any car in this test. There were also present two Chryslers and a Lincoln with closed bodies. The 23 HP. Chryslers appeared capable of about 60 m.p.h., the Lincoln something under 70 m.p.h. One of the most surprising performances was that of the A.C. We had an opportunity of driving the car which is fitted with the very latest 2-litre engine. In touring trim it beat most of the three-litre cars at Shelsley hill climb this year. contd :- | ||
