Battery Charging on Cars.
------------------------

Referring to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/RC.{R. Childs}10/JH.7.1.38, I sent the battery from my car to Mr Minchin, as it had been in service about 2 1/2 years, and was an example of a battery used on a car which did practically all daylight running.

I have now received the Works report from Mr Minchin as follows:-

"We have now examined the 6-BHD9 battery which was returned to us as an example of the effect of purely daylight running, which condition ought to result in a tendency towards overcharging. Our examination of the plates and the deposit shows no evidence of overcharging, but on the other hand there are indications that the charging has been lean.
After the examination the groups were replaced and the battery given a charge, after which capacity tests were taken. As in the case of the battery off your car this bench recharge has resulted in the battery giving its full rated capacity and there is still quite a fair life available from it.
Summing up, it would appear from the two batteries which we have now had at the Works for examination that their voltage control system is not putting sufficient charge into the batteries".
