HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} ) (At Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.) BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ) C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} SECRET. SS.{S. Smith} - SERRATED INSTEAD OF FABRIC COUPLING. N. SCHEME 2812. ORIGINAL R3/M12.2.29. REC'D AT WW. 15.2.29. X7305 Fabric couplings are not really RR. fittings because of their limited life. We must avoid them if possible: we do so on the 20HP. and should be able to on SS.{S. Smith} Referring to the serrated one on the above N. sch. I should not expect the piece screwed in to be really oiltight in every specimen, and also the whole thing looks as though it could be simpler to make by either including the screwed piece in the joint or forming or riveting the (present screwed) piece to the flange. I should have thought that the simplest of all would be to move the flange, thus - say .1 sheet steel. saving weight, room, and cost. Could we not oil both with one hole by overfilling one to feed the other? Perhaps I do not know the limits: we must keep getting simpler and lighter. Now I have broken away you will do wonders.
