drive was responsible for part of this. This connects the "ignition" and "observed" magneto and is 2 to 1 increase (details follow)

We were also deceived by an occasional shorting in the distributor of the ignition magneto, which gives a false image. I can best explain this, by saying that we run the ignition magneto at half the speed of the observed magneto, and originally intended to use the spark from both cams of the ignition magneto. But we got a double vision in this way, due to the inaccuracy of the spacing of the two cams, the difference being roughly 3 or 4 degrees.

So we now connect alternate terminals of the distributor, throw one spark away, and use the other, with a large condensor, for viewing the "oberved" contact breaker, every two revolutions. Occasionally, however, there appears to be a jump in the distributor, when we get again one of the displaced images, due to the idle cam. We have tried to adjust the idle spark gap so as to make this a minimum.

I think this false image gave us A to suppose that there was vibration in the spring and rocker arm, when it was not actually the case. From what we have seen later, it appears that there is no springing of the rocker, and that the leaf spring, though perhaps rendered rather less liable to jump by the extra leaf in the bend, is quite satisfactory without it.

X.2823A B The bosch Z.R.6 tps machine, with the H.S. contact breaker runs with none but very tiny sparks (about 4 or 5 after the "make" spark, and one spark at the "break") at all speeds up to 6000 revs
