X-190 To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} C. Wcr. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/KT. 24.10.33. Y236 GUDGEON PINS WITHOUT INTERFERENCE FIT. Referring to E.S/HP. 26.9.33. We have run over 20 hours at speeds between 4000 and 4500 R.P.M. full throttle on a set of Aerolite pistons fitted with gudgeon pins having a sliding fit when cold. Special provision is made for lubricating these gudgeon pins as shewn in the attached sketch. At the conclusion of this very strenuous run there did not appear to be any gudgeon pin knocks, while the condition of the bearing and pin was good. The material used was K.E.805. A lot of running under cold running conditions is required before a clean bill of health can be given to this departure from our present standard practice, but these preliminary results are very encouraging. In view of the fact that our existing gudgeon pin bosses are going to be strengthened up, and this may alter the distortion characteristics when hot, we are waiting for the new design to test the austenitic steel pins which have been instructed.
