With reference to the trouble that occurs with crankshaft & friction dampers sticking during periods of rest, this might be cured by enclosing the friction unit within the slipper flywheel and keeping this chamber always full of oil.
There are difficulties in carrying out such a scheme - e.g. the oil tends to run back through the feeding channels or holes, (unless held back with spring loaded ball valves which opened by centrifugal action) and also tends to leak through the flywheel bearings. Moreover the flywheel might operate as a separator for dirt and water.
However, the Lanchester fluid crankshaft damper has been operating under somewhat the same conditions for years on Daimler cars, although in this case there is no fibre present.
Possibly it would not be necessary to maintain the chamber always full of oil to overcome the troubles experienced.
