For the attention of Mr.Field.

Dear Sirs,

We have been testing steel brake shoes instead of our usual aluminium ones. We have tried these in conjunction with both MR. and MZ. linings. We find that the shoe expansion is insufficient to keep pace with the drum, the brake pedal reaching the floorboards after a few applications.

We believe that by not using countersunk rivets but letting them touch the drum, this trouble would not exist as the shoes would run at a higher temperature. Have you any experience on this point, and can you tell us what is the best material for the rivets? Are we right in thinking that the rivets may expand and cause the lining to become loose, or that the rivets may disintegrate?

Also would you expect MZ. to be better than MR. by having a greater heat conductivity?

Could you carry out any experiments for us to determine whether the very thick linings we use are a reason for the shoe expansion not following the drum? Would the shoe run hotter using a thinner lining?

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
