C.R. No. 185. (SHT. 1). O.{Mr Oldham} & C. 12-5-15. G & Co. X.185 To Nor. for Mr. Ellis from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} R2/1818.6.15. X.1781 - RE INDUCTION COIL. X.562. X.704. X.168. X.1317. With reference to the coil which you sent me having a trembler fitted with balls, this I fear, would not be of much use as it might easily get damaged with poor workmanship or rust. Moreover, there is no reason to suppose that it would be a control which was free from a slack. I therefore think it is decidedly inferior to the knife edge system as used in the Carpentier trembler. I regret to say that the coil arrived here in a condition in which it could not possibly work, the reason being that the usual natural rough handling in transit had moved the iron core to such an extent that it was jammed hard on the armature. With this construction as we have it at present, the core must be thoroughly well secured in the ebonite plate. This is the third core I have found moved. As soon as ever possible I will send you instructions for a modified construction. I am returning the coil, which may be useful for further experiments, and in the meantime will you please send to me the (1) small model coil which I believe you have, and also (2) the separate trembler and the (3) single spark coil. X.1777. The coil with the Carpentier trembler on car 58NA{Mr Nadin} is so far all right, and works better than our usual standard. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
