EH. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} C. Sft.{Mr Swift} X7770 EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}4/H30.9.29. re. Phantom II. High Speed Steering. This feature is now being complained of by PN.{Mr Northey} on 2-WJ car, and we learn from JLL. that he is now making comparisons in the constructional features of the steering, especially the loading of the side steering tube ball end, between 2-WJ and 18-EX. As a chassis we were satisfied that 2-WJ steering was O.K. and up to the standard of the Phantom II production cars, demonstrated and agreed to by the Experimental Department, and in our opinion is similar to 1-WJ which we have recently had at the Works, and which has been tested by all parties. We understand from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} that there is a modification now going through to increase the loading on the ball ends of the side steering tube. This has not yet come through on production chassis, but Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} recommends that we should supply the parts for this modification to be made on the car about which PN.{Mr Northey} is complaining. We are informed by the Works that a set of these parts will not be ready for despatch until Thursday of this week. Can SFT.{Mr Swift} please urge these. It may be that 3-WJ has developed some trouble of high speed steering since leaving the Works, and we have today pressed JLL. to obtain PN{Mr Northey}'s opinion of the comparative steerings between 1-WJ and 2-WJ, as 1-WJ has been tried by all at the Works and considered to be the best all round steering, in fact from my point of view, I very much prefer it to the experimental cars, i.e. 31-EX, which I am assuming is similar to 18-EX. Personally, before altering the standard of the present side steering tube, I should like a demonstration of the advantages of this alteration before the alteration is definitely made on production cars, which I now understand will eventually be the case.
