-3- We have been doing some experiments recently on car engine vibrations at high revs., and we find we cannot get a plain bore crankshaft to run smoothly in its case without a certain amount of vibration and periods. We know the periods are not torsional, and we are inclined to blame the springiness of our aluminium crankcases, but have not yet proved this. We should be interested to hear if you have any suggestions, and whether you have ever had any reason to suspect the presence of whirling periods in an engine. Yours sincerely, For Rolls-Royce Ltd. | ||
