would be filled up with oil periodically, from a syringe and the oil would pass through the hole drilled in the bottom of the shaft into the space between the two bushes, whence it would be worked endways into the two bushes by their motion on the shaft. The space between the two bushes might be quite narrow, say 1/16", so that the capillary effect would draw the oil around the shaft. We think ordinary engine oil might prove most satisfactory in this part since it would take advantage more rapidly of the occasional opportunities of getting round the upper part of the shaft, as when the shackle is rocked on the shaft when rounding a corner.

If end wear occurred it could be rapidly rectified by renewing the bushes.

It might be found advisable to sweat the bushes in place in the shackle to prevent their twisting loose.

Internal battery position. We are at present mounting the Exide XC-11-S battery in the internal position, where the customer requires this position.

With the 24" longer wheelbase contemplated, we could use the extra-good quality Exide (the "LXR" type) which is guaranteed for two years, or the Willar, which has an exceptionally fine system of servicestations all over the country.

Both these batteries are too long for the present chassis, if the battery is to be withdrawable through the rear floor-boards.

On the American chassis we would suggest that the footbrake actuating lever on the back axle at least on the R.H. side of the car, (or on the L.H. side if L.H. steering is adopted) should be set over so as to move the brake cable about 1" so nearer the side-member. This would give more side-room for the battery, and would permit a water-proof cover to be used over the battery terminals.

We understand that with the three-speed gearbox a new design of starter will be used, geared to the flywheel. While it is appreciated that this will not be as silent as the present starter it is thought that its greater simplicity is desirable, and that the American user will prefer it because, in case of stalling the engine unexpectedly while manoeuvring, pressure on the clutch and starting pedal will start it up again, which is the usual arrangement on American cars.

Tyre Pump. We are looking for a good type of foot-operated tyre pump.
