ROLLS-ROYCE INC. AMERICA SPRINGFIELD, MASS. YO-11 May 21st, 1929. Mr. Robotham. Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby, England. Dear Mr. Robotham: HERRING CYLINDER Many thanks for your note of 28th April. It is not possible to make any more comments at the moment as we have not yet had the opportunity of testing the two undoubtedly different surfaces with "seven" level faces. We have, however, since been down at the station to see the Herring cylinder with the broken ring and also the pistons. We enclose herewith a sketch showing our latest development of the Castor oil scraper ring, which seems to have given the new stiffening effect of the rubber blocks. Initial installation of such a shape of course is impossible and we must be content with some such shape as shown on print F.E.610. The only way out would be to make it in two halves and we are of the opinion that there is a sound argument for this. There is no reason why the parts on the hub should not frequently be damaged and require replacing. By making it in two parts the cost of reducing the "stiffness" of the rubber bumper behind the spring would be good. The Office are now going into the question of a good compound for the oil scraper rings and our experimental men are shortly going to try out our first springs. Yours very truly, ROLLS ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. Maurice Olley | ||
