The following are extracts from Cr{Mr Cra???ster / Mr Chichester}'s Report No.

1390 re Mr. A.{Mr Adams} L. Onslow's chassis No. 713.

"Springing. Said to be O.K. Mr. Onslow had got the front and back springs bound round with two pairs of puttees on each and some Millesden canvas on top of these. He told me that before fitting the same he thoroughly cleaned all the springs and applied a liberal amount of graphite; he then left the springs for five years and on examining thereafter found no trace of must except a very slight amount at the ends."

"Mileage run to date. 80,000 to 100,000 miles."

"Petrol Consumption. Mr. Onslow had some very interesting records on this point. In pre-War days he always used Benzol, passing it before use through filter paper, a practice that he still continues. He showed me some filter paper that had been used, and it was heavily marked with what appeared to be fine particles of rust. I should say that might be scaling detached from the iron drums (in which Benzol is supplied) by chemical action. In those days he reckoned to get 17 m.p.g., then came the War when he had to rely upon petrol of even poorer quality with the following results:-

1915. Miles covered 4116 - m.p.g. 16.4 (some benzol still)
1916. " " 1815 " 12.83
1917 No record
1918 Miles covered 1997 " 9.8.
1919 " " 2419 " 12.37

Mr. Onslow is now again using benzol, and obtaining far better results. On a trip to Devonshire and back, a distance of 490 odd miles, last Autumn with a mixture of Benzol and Petrol, heavy and light, he averaged 20 m.p.g.
Mr. Onslow uses Benzol from Majors, of Hull.
Perhaps you would like to send these extracts to R.{Sir Henry Royce} if you consider they are of sufficient interest.
