With reference to the union between the two outlets of the exhaust manifolds and the vertical pipes. I have on several occasions recently met with trouble at these points, either with the joint blowing, or with the union nut working loose, the same thing having occurred in the case of 31-LW. ( the car which I use).

In each case I have had the union unscrewed and have removed the copper and asbestos washer before tightening the joint up again. This has always resulted in a tight joint and in the case of 31-LW. at least, it has cured the tendency to work loose.

I believe the introduction of a C. & A.{Mr Adams} Washer at this point has only been done recently, and I should be glad to know whether there is any objection to removing them as I have been doing. There appears to be no proper provision for centre-ing the washer and none of them which I have examined have been gripped concentrically, they have, apparently, caused an ob-struction in the straight bore of the outlet and the asbestos of the washer has become dislodged.
