[Handwritten] 328. To HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry{Shadwell Grylls} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}6/AP.12.1.37. P.3. GEARBOX No.8.HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} We have run this gearbox 10 hours on 3rd. and 2nd. to determine whether the soft spline gears have developed any backlash. We now wish to use it to find out whether the fit of the 1st. motion shaft bearings has any effect on the side shaft noise. Will you please therefore rebuild this box afterexamination with new 1st. motion shaft bearings and also a new thrust bearing housing. The bearings themselves should be the original type, that is to say, they should not be lapped and the rear bearing should be of the gap filling type. We should be glad if you will do this as soon as possible as we want to avoid the increased cost on Production of the lapped bearings. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} | ||
