1269. To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} c. to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.1/JH.30.8.38. GREASE FOR WATER PUMPS AND FANS ALL CHASSIS. We notice that water pumps and fans being built by production at present are packed with the ordinary chassis grease - Duckhams is the brand used we believe. The water pump obviously requires a special grease to combat the conditions under which it has to operate - temperature and presence of water, and we have used such a grease Mobilgrease No.6 on our experimental cars for several years now and it is entirely successful. Will you therefore please instruct - (a) That all water pumps built in future are packed with Mobilgrease No.6 only (b) that all pumps which are serviced are also repacked with this grease - at the same time the glands should be fitted with Palmetto packing. With regard to fan grease, since Phantom III, Wraith and B.11 M series cars fans are all grease packed and not oil lubricated, it is desireable to use grease which will stay in the hub as long as possible. The best way we have found so far is to pack the front bearing and hub with the ordinary chassis grease at present used for fans and to pack the rear bearing with Belmoline High Melting point grease (by immersing bearing and allowing it to solidify) This method of grease packing has already been recommended for Wraith and Phantom III fans (Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.9/MH.{M. Huckerby}28.6.38) but the Wraith fans being built at the moment are not being packed in this manner. Will By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} please issue the necessary instructions for the above mentioned grease packing of water pumps and fans. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std. | ||
