Y1583 Expl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}S/MJ. June 16th,1930. Messrs. C.C. Wakefield & Co.Ltd., Wakefield House, 30 & 32, Cheapside, LONDON.E.C.2. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. Massey. We have been running the gearbox oil which you submitted to us on various road tests. On our Dynamometer test, which is particularly severe, we have the following report :- "We have used the sample of Wakefield's Castrol "S" oil you submitted to us in three Phantom 11 gearboxes. After the dynamometer test the condition of the gear surfaces was poor - there were definite signs of "picking up" and we consider the condition generally to be not quite so good as gearboxes run with the standard Amber "A"." We are not altogether satisfied with Amber "A" and we find that we can get much better results is we add a small quantity of Whitmore's Hypoid Axle Compound to the Amber "A". We think that you should modify your gearbox oil in some way so as to improve it, and we are quite willing to test out further samples when this has been done. Yours faithfully, For Rolls-Royce Ltd. | ||
