[Handwritten]: Y4617 X. 8535 CABLE CONNECTIONS TO BATTERY WHEN BATTERY BOX OF COACHBUILDERS' MAKE IS USED. Inspecting a number of customers' chassis in the Repair Dept. recently, I have noticed that the cable connections to the batteries when boxes made by the coachbuilder have been used have not been well carried out. In some cases the cables have passed right over the open top of the battery in finding their way to the terminals and even right across the top of one of the vents where acid might be spraying out, these cables being often entirely unprotected from the action of the acid. In other cases the light current cable to the positive terminal has been too long and loosely flopping about and chafing against the metalwork of the chassis. In either case of acid or chafing the cotton covering gets removed and were it not for the good qualities of the rubber covering a short circuit at such points, with disastrous results, might occur. I feel some of these cases should not have been passed by our own inspectors. I should like to see these cable connections to the battery terminals carried out in a more methodical manner, in which they are just of suitable length; and it should never be the case that any cables have to pass over the top of the battery in reaching the terminals.
