Front Brake Squeaks.

The Test Dept: complaint of front brakes squeaking has been investigated, and we find the cause to be due to false bedding of the brake shoes.

We examined the bedding of the front brakes on a Test Dept: axle that was squeaking, and found, that with a true reading of the bedding on the O.S. the trailing shoe only showed signs of bedding, and on the N.S. the wrapping shoe only showed signs of bedding. Under these conditions almost any brakes will squeak. We had the shoes re-bedded, not touching any other part, and no squeaks or groans under any condition of braking could be obtained.

We should like to point out the false bedding of the front brakes is obtained by placing too much load on the lever when taking a reading. The front brake drums being made flexible can be sprung into any shape and it is very important, that when bedding the shoes, as little weight as possible should be applied to the toggle lever, so as not to distort the drum. The brakes bedded in this way should not squeak, a solid feeling will be felt instead of the spongy feeling.
