in order to obtain satisfactory engines.

Although I do not expect to entirely eliminate this, I certainly feel that by adopting the above practice we shall reduce it to a minimum.

In the meantime, I take it we are still pushing ahead with experimental work on pistons which do not require fitting to these close clearances, which certainly appears to be necessary at present, in order to avoid audible piston knocks, or danger of seizing up.
