Dear Sirs.,

Referring to your letter of the 7th inst., dealing with wire wheels for our chassis, these parts appear to be all in order, with the exception of the spoking of the E.5.single wheel.

You will remember that we wrote to you on this subject in September 1916, pointing out certain features in regard to the spoking, particulars of which we are again giving you herewith.

The spoking scheme as it has been, had developed trouble with regard to our cars which are running in America, with the result that a large number of wheels have been re-spoked in America.

Referring to your spoking diagram number 18, you will notice that A and B spokes only cross three similar spokes on the tangent. When the wheels were re-built in America it was arranged that one spoke would cross four, and our representative in U.S.A. definitely states that wheels spoked according to this scheme have never given any trouble.

We attach herewith copy of his report giving the diagrams referred to. We would like to have a well considered opinion from yourselves in regard to this particular point of design, as we are distinctly inclined to think that the new spoking arrangement will throw less stress on to the spokes than the older one.

Yours faithfully,
FOR ROLLS ROYCE LIMITED.
