20HP. GEAR QUADRANT AND GAS-TIGHTNESS.

With reference to the question of keeping hot air fumes etc from coming up through the gear quadrant gashes, we send herewith N. sch. 2634. shewing how we suggest it should be done.

We believe that information similar to this was sent by Mr. Stent somewhere about 1924, but does not appear to have been followed up.

We propose that the same gear lever should be used on both steerings, namely, 16.5 in length. The brake lever should be dropped to 22.5 instead of 23.75. We suggest that the brake lever should be thickened to .3125, namely, the same thickness as the Phantom,when it will be 1.75 times as stiff as the original lever. We think this should get over the complaint of springiness.

With regard to the gastightness we have suggested that wooden blocks should be screwed permanently to the floorboards, and felt packing pressed up by a sheet metal attachment to the frame should close the gap inside the frame side channel. we could have made the wooden blocks aluminium castings with some gain in neatness, but as a result of consideration we thought the most practical plan was to merely use blocks screwed to the floorboards.

Though we have shewn this for the lower floor it is obvious that it can equally well be used for the existing 2 1/4" floor.
