X.4215. RE BLERIOT ELECTRICAL CUTOUT.

Please see Mr. Wormald. I am so very pleased with this arrangement, from inspection and your report, that I think they have touched a spot where improvements are required, that is -

(1) Overheating of the cutout, causing change of time or cutting in.

(2) Want of reliability of at the contacts, and

(3) permitting a discharge current through the dynamo, when running just below a charging speed.

I should like the supplies to be arranged that this cutout can be substituted for the present one as quickly as possible. The Lucas ones are quite unsatisfactory, and we do not expect the Smith to be perfection, so that it would be better not to introduce the Smith at all if we can avoid, it, and therefore have one less variety in service.

This is a device where an increase in complication is justifiable because it adds to perfection in operation and reliability, and saves maintenance costs, which is the Rolls-Royce principle and practice.

R. {Sir Henry Royce}
