I have the impression that the Goshawk engine is susceptible to bad petrol and cold weather, better than most engines but not quite so good as we had hoped, and will require as is usual the water temperature keeping as high as is safe. This we are arranging to do, if found desirable, with thermostatic controlled louvres. For future designs we propose to test an arrangement which we have sent you to test on the present 40/50 engine in which we fit the carburetter on the same side as the induction and exhaust pipes. Mr. Elliott has sent about 6 months ago a sketch of this arrangement - drawing No. Lec.1350 size 3. We want this tested in the easiest possible manner, as quickly as possible as it will affect our policy as regards the new Vulture marine engine which we are at present working on.
