Phantom III - Ignition Governor and Distributor.

Our inspection of the mechanism after the endurance test has shewn us that the condition of the parts is very similar to those taken off experimental cars.

It will be remembered that the object of this bench test was to ascertain the amount of oil supply to the governor parts.

We notice that most of the oil from the hand lubricator has remained above the ball race, there being a fair quantity between the rocker base plate and the aluminium floor.

The oil collector of the advance spindle has received oil, but there has been no excess to lubricate the governor arms and pins. In passing however this scheme is almost exactly as used for years on the 25-HP.

This governor casing has no ventilation except via the distributor, and we think this may be the cause of holding the oil back in the distributor chamber., also there is no outlet for the nitrous oxide vapours which has caused the corrosion.

We have made a design LeC.5259 showing where to drill the vent holes. This should be first tried experimentally.

We think the excessive corrosion on the make and brake mechanism and the rusty ball-bearing may be due to running this test in close proximity to battery charging in the laboratory, as the pieces appear far worse than on any car we have seen.
