X.4216 To Da. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from EFC. {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} c. Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} " " " Bn. {W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} EFC {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} 3/T17.11.20. X.4216 - RE COMBINED STARTER AND DYNAMO. There have been submitted to me some particulars of a combined electric starter and dynamo which, by means of an epicyclic gear and certain mechanism at the driving end, will automatically run three times as fast as the driving pinion when operating as a motor and at the same speed as the driving pinion when operating with the dynamo, so that the principal difficulty of the design of the combined unit is overcome. I am, therefore, submitting for your consideration blueprint, photograph and copies of a letter and descriptive matter received in connection with this machine and I hope you will give me an opinion upon this, particularly from the point of view of the mechanical design of the automatic change speed mechanism. Also to say whether you think this is of sufficient interest to us to warrant my putting the whole matter before Mr. Royce for his consideration. You will notice that the proprietors of this scheme are prepared to dispose of the sole rights of manufacture, and I have promised an answer in about a week's time as to whether we are at all interested in this and will go into the matter further, or as to whether we do not wish to bother with it in any way. I have also been offered in connection with it for the 12/20 Benz car to be brought up here with this, [illegible] Contd. | ||
