1020 EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Cwdl.23/JH. 2nd. February, 1939. Messrs. Vandervell Products Ltd., Western Ave. Park Royal, LONDON.W.3. For the attention of Mr. Johnson. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of the 31st. ult. and note you are producing the four sets of Clevite thrust washers .137 thickness, otherwise to EX.1342, also that it is satis-factory to incorporate grooves in the rocker bushes EB.4198. As the result of a discussion on main bearings some time ago you produced a layout for us L.1108 whereby the top and bottom half bearings were made interchangeable and the dimensions of the position of the locking tabs were made more regular. The above was for the 2.5 journal crankshaft in the aluminium engine with steel bearing caps. As you know, the intermediate main bearings as ran over the 15,000 miles test were not entirely satisfactory and we are of the opinion that if the crankshaft journal dimension was stepped up to 2.75 dia. the bearings would be more satis-factory. In view of the above therefore we should be pleased if you would prepare a layout for us on the lines of L.1108 but for 2.75 dia. journal crank and following its approval will communicate with you in regard to the bearing required. Enclosed is a drawing of the bearing cap which shows that when opened up to 2.902 for the 2.75 bearings, the locking tab dimensions of L.1108 cannot be used owing to the position | ||
