Our Ref Sales.2/AMS/DN 11th December, 1940 Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., D E R B Y. Attention - Mr. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Dear Sirs, Re 10 CF Clutch We thank you for your letter of the 3rd inst., outlining report on periodic Lever flutter on the 10 CF Clutch, we also thank you for your enclosed graph. We have given your report consideration and feel that in all probability flutter is due to centrifugal load just beginning to compress the Clutch Plates and set up a balance between the two giving a flutter or "hunting" of Levers. It will be appreciated that the centrifugal assistance of the weights approximately doubles the load on the Pressure Plate at 3500 R.P.M. This additional load tends to flatten the Drive Plate Crimp completely so that the inner ends of the Levers move backwards. We venture to suggest that in the course of the experiments you are making, you drill say a 1/4" hole through the Bob Weights with a view to reducing the centrifugal load. A 1/4" hole would reduce the Bob Weight by approximately one fourth and the centrifugal force by an equivalent amount, so that the Engine R.P.M. could be increased. Handwritten note: 17% With reference to your suggestion to stiffening the Cover we could do little in this regard if you will recall that the Cover is a part we obtained from the Long Manufacturing Co., U.S.A.
