EFC!/AD18.12.30. contd.

We have endeavoured to explain in recent reports the reasons of the limitations and the fact that we cannot, for certain definite reasons e.g. the absence of automatic control of the charge, allow the dynamo to give as much current as it is actually capable of giving in certain other circumstances.

It will be appreciated that the points mentioned by R.{Sir Henry Royce} in his first four paragraphs are all covered by the work we are doing to improve the output performance.

The last two paragraphs of RL/M13.12.30 refer to the two-rate charge scheme. We do not know of any other good reason for reducing the charging current to the battery than that of this being too heavy and causing too much over charging when no lighting is used. It does, even with the improvements in batteries, still remain important that the battery shall not be subject to the very high charging rate for any considerable periods when already in a fully charged condition.

In regard to the last paragraph of R's note, if a resistance is used at all, it has been demonstrated that the most efficient position electrically is in the field winding; a resistance was tried in the main positive brush tyes conductor and proved to be worse. With regard to the suggestion of putting the head lamp current round a series winding on the dynamo, this might be quite good in principle but would involve so great additional complication with wiring and terminals, as to be, in our opinion, out of the question.

Our difficulty generally in these matters is that though we are ourselves quite fully conversant with all the intricacies, these are not so simple as to render them readily explicable to others. We know very well what is required and have endeavoured to indicate this in our various reports, one suggestion being that of the lengthened armature dynamo.
