SECRET. +328 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and HMG. from HDY.{William Hardy} HDY.{William Hardy}1/HP.8.3.35. c.c. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Dev SpectreCodename for Phantom III Gearbox. N. Sch.4405 herewith shews what we propose as a temporary arrangement to enable this box to be tried with ball bearings in place of roller bearings at the earliest opportunity. This scheme does not require any alteration to the gearbox casing or to the front cover, but a new constant mesh pinion is necessary and a new 1st motion shaft which must have the top gear synchro mesh cone in one with the shaft, and if the sliding piece is not to be altered, the top gear teeth must be sunk below the face of the cone, somewhat as we show, and the pointing operation may be more difficult. One special bearing is required and we state the number and size of balls we expect to be provided based on New Departure proportions. A standard bearing can be used for the centre bearing of the 3rd motion shaft by shortening the boss of the 1st gear and the helically splined sleeve as we show. Some of these bearings may prove to be overloaded when made to Hoffmann's proportions and in this case if roller bearings are unsatisfactory on comparison, we may have to ask for special bearings with new departure proportions.
