AUTOMATIC BOOST CONTROL.
X4033
R.A.E.

Our first engine fitted with automatic boost control and the new mixture pipe is now at Farnborough for the R.A.E. tests in the S.F.

We have done a lot of work on the boost control and have gone as far as we can on the test bed. We now urgently require flight information on its general functioning to see what further development it is necessary for us to pursue here.

We are afraid the R.A.E. may start upon too wide an investigation and so miss to furnish us quickly with the chief characteristics we wish to know.

We would suggest that Capt. Forsythe be approached with the view to asking that the preliminary tests take the form of the giving us the pilot's general impression of the handling of the engine in the course of normal flight, at take off (max. boost) and when opening up the engine, both quickly and slowly, after a glide. We should also like the simple boost press. readings on a climb to 12000 ft. No doubt they would supply us with an interim report.

Perhaps it could be arranged for me to visit R.A.E. when this machine is flying so that I could observe its general operation in flight and discuss the various points with the pilot.
