1256 EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation}3/JH. 25th August, 1938. Wellworthy Ltd., Lymington, Hants. Dear Sirs, In connection with our research on cylinder bore wear, we propose to evaluate the relative merits of certain different materials. This is to be done by a friction test on a machine. Enclosed, is a drawing HR.638. The disc shown, will represent the cylinder iron, and the peg is proposed to be made of piston ring material. We would like you to produce these pegs, from say a ring of centre-cast material. On the other hand, you can supply sufficient material, for us to cut out and machine the pegs. The material will be, of course, the same as for the rings which you supply for our car production. We would like your comment at an early date, as we wish to push ahead with this experiment, and as soon as it is decided that you can do this job, we can send an official order to cover the necessary work. Finally we would appreciate any suggestions you may have in connection with this experiment. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
