Realizing that only six spare manifolds were available on the spare engine, it was necessary to get some temporary ones made up quickly. Eventually a large garage in Buenos Aires began to make up some manifolds of sheet steel.

At this stage Kaye Don, Garner and myself unpacked the spare engine which had been stored at the Frigorifico Anglo at Buenos Aires, removed the exhaust manifolds and Garner took these up to Tigre. Further people had been approached re the exhaust manifolds with the result that the Frigorifico Anglo engineering dept. went all out to help us.

These boxes were heavy, weighing twelve pounds each and were also a rough job, but more serviceable and stronger than the first firm's effort.

Back again at Tigre. A careful examination was made of each of the bores for scores or any pieces of broken exhaust box, all the cylinders were clear and O.K. except for a slight rust on the liners. The complete water system to the exhaust manifolds was next dismantled and all pipes examined for any foreign matter liable to cause a stoppage, all the system was clear including the scoop.

All this was done through Monday night and Tuesday.

WEDNESDAY 25.3.31.

A further firm now asked if they could weld up our broken boxes as they claimed they had the finest equipment and used the latest German methods of aluminium welding. We decided to allow them to do what they could but only as a very last hope did we expect having to use the boxes so repaired.

Mr. Cooper had the boat up on the slip-way belonging to the Tigre Yacht Club and examined the bottom of the boat and passed everything O.K. Work continued fitting up the spare aluminium boxes, the removal and fitting of these boxes in the boat was very difficult, the petrol tanks having to be disconnected and moved up forward to allow the boxes to be drawn off the studs.
