Mr. Shelton. c. Ws. c. Sft.{Mr Swift} X.411. BY15/H5.11.24. ENGINE TIMING GEARS. X.1540 X.411. In order to do away with the necessity for topping gears by grinding owing to the fact that approximately .016 radius is carried on the point of the hob, and this is necessary in order to keep the hob in reasonable condition, I propose that in future we shall increase the depth of the gears by approx. .010". This amount will prevent the radius formed in the bottom of the teeth interfering with the addendum of the mating tooth during the running of the gears. In the meantime, the Works will continue to top the gears by grinding, as I understand they have been doing in the past, as this is the only way at the moment of overcoming the interference and getting the gears quiet.
