BIRMINGHAM.

Dear Mr. Daniell,

We have measured up the joint we brought back and find that the average diametrical slack of the unworn parts is about 1 1/2 thou. This joint was not, therefore, as tight as we thought. In the R.R. joint the slack is 2 to 4 tenths, i.e. the diameter of the outer race is 2 to 5 tenths greater than the sum of the inner race plus two rollers. Can you make us up for test a joint to this clearance ?

We do not find that the housing becomes taper when in position. It does, however, become oval. Measurement of the bores in the yoke show them to be oval by .001 and .0005 respectively, "A" being greater than "B".

Whether the bores have distorted in use we cannot tell, but you could measure this on some new parts.

Yours sincerely,
