X4612. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C.E. Dx. SIR, LITTLE HAL. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}8/MH.{M. Huckerby}22.6.33 re PHANTOM II & 25 HP. CHASSIS BRAKE DRUMS OUT OF BALANCE -------------------------------------------------- Although we have no record of any definite complaints from customers running cars with the above, we do feel rather concerned that there are possibilities that this may give some trouble, especially as regards the front wheels for steering, etc. All the wheels of the chassis when they leave the Works are balanced to a maximum of 4 ozs. fixed on the inside of the rim; as a matter of fact, the average is about 2 ozs. The limit of the out of balance of the drum can also be up to a maximum of 3 1/2 ozs. Chassis are also turned out with the wheels interchangeable, including the spares. It is possible, therefore, that in service the wheel may be fixed in which the two out of balance effects may combine. We should like you to make some tests on one of your cars as to what the effect of this combination may be, since if the running of the car is affected it may be advisable to take steps to avoid this being possible.
