EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. -2- Expl. No. REF Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/LG1610 will develop low speed wobble. Carefully check the lean of the pivot and if it is more than 1°, alter it by altering the angle of the wedge to bring the pivot more nearly vertical. In addition we make the following recommendations :- (a) Balance the wheels. (b) Blow the tyres up as hard as is compatible with the degree of comfort required, as they are low pressure - we suggest 35 - 40 lbs/sq.in. (c) Keep the front shock absorbers adjusted to 50 lbs. (d) Ascertain that no springs are broken in the side steering tube and no slack in the cross steering tube. We have had wide experience of low pressure tyres on the front of our cars and have always found them exceptionally bad for wobbles. This has been confirmed by Michelin's and Dunlops on other cars. This is the reason why we state specifically that they shall not be used on the front of R-R cars. To definitely eliminate shimmy under these conditions we have to make alterations to the steering, which, in our opinion are not desirable and which we cannot recommend. We believe that the majority of cars with light, self-centering steering suffer from this trouble and overcome it by making the steering heavier. Will you be good enough to let us have the Chassis No. of your car. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
