GOSHAWK II. IMPROVED DIFFERENTIAL. X4286

The trouble with the differential crown wheel rolling teeth is almost certainly due to less than all 4 pinions taking load.

It suggests:-

(1) Unhardened pinions so that these can roll their teeth and equalise.

(2) Slack bush to control crown wheel shaft so that this can move about and equalise.

(3) More care in erection to ensure weight on all pinions. i.e. tight bushes for crown wheel shaft which should afterwards be eased to allow equalising.

All these parts make as hard as is practical, but not brittle, but of more equal hardness, being certain that the crown wheels are the harder.

Air hardening steel might be thought best.

The driving shafts have been modified, having a large number of keys on the outside of the diameter in place of a small number of keys cut into the shaft. This obviously ought to have been done in the first instance so as to avoid the stress changes.
