Shell Corner,
Kingsway, W.C. 2.

Dear Sirs,

With further reference to your letter of the 31st of October regarding the testing by us of the oils manufactured by your firm, in order to ascertain whether they are suitable for our engines, your suggestion has received consideration but I regret that it is impossible for us to test and report on all the various brands of oil which we have submitted to us.

We have similar requests from other suppliers, but we have to run a car for some 20,000 to 30,000 miles in order to obtain sufficient data to enable us adequately to ascertain how any brand of oil behaves on our car, and with the work we have in hand at present it is impossible to do this.

It may be that you, on your side, have some intensive system of testing oil by which you can show to us that your oil is equal to that which we at present recommend. We quite recognise that you may not be able to reproduce all conditions in the engine, but it is possible you may be able to show us that your oil has a reasonable chance of success before we consider starting on a test.

If this is so and provided that you point out to us any definite advantage that we or our customers would receive were we to recommend the Shell Mex Oil in place of the oil we now recommend, you may rest assured your application will receive consideration, if particulars are sent to our Mr. Hives at our Works at Derby.
