-2- The crack shown in photomicrograph No.A1543 was noted in the curved part of the arm near the small end. It is situated in the mass of ferrite shown (white) in photomicrograph No. A1544 (depth of flaw 0.040"). Several other branches of ferrite were noted in our specimens. They are due to decarburisation and folds in the surface of the forging. We call your attention to their presence as they would give trouble if subjected to fatigue stresses. Hl.
