| LL SMITH 302 BY: O - E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Dd. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} E/HDY.{William Hardy}1/HP.21.12.36. Phantom III Rear Axle. We send herewith N.Sch.4982 showing stiffer axle shafts for this car. The upper view shows a shaft 1.400 diameter instead of the present 1.250 giving an increase of stiffness of 57%, and the lower view shows a 1.500 shaft giving an increase of 107%. The 1.4" shaft can be fitted to existing axles by opening out the ends of the differential casing, but the 1.5" shaft requires a new differential casing which also requires a slight forging alteration. However if we desired to bring this on before existing differential casings were used up these could presumably be used on the 25/30. It is thought that experiments should be confined to begin with to the 1.5" shaft. The material should remain S/ZNCR. E/HDY.{William Hardy} N.Sch.4982 herewith. | ||
