Oil Consumption - 21-G-IV. Unit C-16.

Originally the above unit was fitted to 21-G-IV as a standard engine. The first run taken over 190 miles (Oxford and return) gave an oil consumption of 203 M.P.G. for an average speed of 44.7 M.P.H. After a total mileage of 500, a repeat run showed 257 M.P.G. for an average speed of 44.4 M.P.H.

At this stage the scraper rings were changed from standard to 'D' type 32.2 sq.in. lbs. A first run under these conditions gave a consumption of 361 M.P.G., average speed 43.3 M.P.H. Repeat run gave 448 M.P.G., average speed 44.5 M.P.H.

From these figures it will be seen that where the 'D' type rings are fitted we have approx. a 75% better consumption for the first 500 miles. It should be remembered that the 'D' type rings had the advantage of compression rings which had completed 500 miles.

A consumption run taken after 1100 miles (same piston rings) by C. Ward round Buxton and the Peak gave an oil consumption of 496 M.P.G., average speed 41.3 M.P.H.

A slower run after 1200 miles (Birmingham and return twice) - average speed 33 M.P.H., oil consumption 1008 M.P.G.
