X.4072. To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to CJ. " " BJ. " " Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} " " EFC. X.4072 X.3419a. RE EXHAUST PIPE NOZZLE. R4/G21.6.20. Will you please get this standardised right away, and stop the production of the very heavy cast steel ones which are at present being fitted. The risk of this fitting being wrong is very remote, and if it really was wrong it would not be a serious matter, whereas the present heavy nozzle is likely to break the pipes, as it is on the end of the cantilever beginning with the fixing on the end of the rear silencer. If you get this put in hand immediately there is not doubt that before you could possibly get them on the cars the standardisation sheets will be obtained. It will be remembered that 1.EX has always had a sheet steel nozzle fitted, so that the only thing that has to go through a lengthy test is the vibration between this particular nozzle and the one we think of adopting. We think there should be no delay in getting all the officers to agree to this fitting being standardised in place of the terrible steel casting that was brought to West WitteringHenry Royce's home town recently.
