X.3539. RE 20 HP. PROPELLER SHAFT AND TORQUE TUBE

N. SCHEME 107.

With reference to the above, would you kindly note that Mr. Royce has criticised this scheme and the following is the summation of the points which would be modified:-

(1). Turn down the outside of the propeller shaft still further, so as to make the wall of the tube thinner.

(2) Leave sufficient clearance endways for the propeller shaft and also make a series of washers at one end, of different thicknesses in suitable steps, to cover the variations which will effect the end clearance of the propeller shaft. The washers can be used under one of the pieces which provide spherical end seats for the propeller shaft.

(3) Not so many pins should be used in the brazed joint at the spherical end of the torque tube, particularly delete those pins in the thin outside edge of the flanged piece.

(4) Do not use reinforcing sleeves in the end of the propeller shaft tube.

(5) Provide a lead on for the rear castellated joint to enable the propeller shaft to be easily engaged.

(6) Arrange some differences so that the propeller shaft cannot be put in the wrong way round. It may be found that this point will be conveniently provided for in the alterations required for the lubrication system.

(7) Cannot the torque tube be two-thirds of the thickness
