BRAKES.

Thank you for your memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}I/R.9.2.38.
The pull-on spring as on 6.B.IV. did not make any noticeable difference to the servo judder, so we are now fitting the new halo 3L discs you sent us. The discs removed appeared to be in perfectly good condition and there was no sign of water in the servo.

We have studied the brake setting instructions which you enclosed with your memo. Our setting is as near to this as is possible to get with the existing parts and we followed the same routine. There is however a discrepancy.

Referring to paragraph (e), when the idler lever L3 is at the forward limit of its travel, and the stops on the bell cranks D1 D2 are within .050" of the limit of their travel, the transverse rods R3 R4 are only long enough to enter one thread into the yokes on the bell cranks.
You will therefore see that we were quite in order in querying the layout of the brake operating mechanism on this car.

In view of the various discrepancies and faults noted and the changes we have made to the brake system on 6.B.IV.-Bentley, and the importance of both systems regarding standardisation, I am going to ask Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} when I see him next week, if you can come out here for a few days to examine and try both systems and check up on our results. I hope this will be possible as it seems very advisable under the circumstances.
