Smith's Jackall Jacking System for
Ph.III Chassis.

Smith's have now installed a "Jackall" Jacking system to the dummy Ph.III chassis allotted to them, which I tried out in London on the 18th inst.

Generally, the operation and stability of the jacks gives one a good impression.

Below is given a detailed report of the installation, bearing inmind that one or two modifications are to be carried out :-

Front Jacks.

These are the single stage type.
Overall closed length of jack 14.00"
Extension of jack 10.500"
Diameter of jack 1.625"

The jacks are installed on the "Wishbones", our old buffer plates have been replaced by forgings of stronger dimensions, suitably designed to carry the jacks and so positioned to clear the brake adjustment and frame on full bump and rebound. The front jacks at present are toed in more than necessary, and on account of this just foul the track rods on full lock. This will be overcome when the jacks are in a more vertical position.

The Jack pads in closed position come approximately .500" below the retaining nuts on the wishbone, and we have asked them to raise the jacks so that the pads are level with the nuts. This means that the tyre ground clearance in th fully jacked position will be reduced from 2.00" to 1.500".
