To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X8150 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/LG9.1.28. 40/50 HP. WATER PUMPS. X1360 We send you herewith some information out of our files on work we have been recently doing on water water pump glands. We should be obliged if you would return this after perusal. The point we had in mind was that improvements which might be incorporated in the new pump were :- (1) Friction drive. The present friction drive appears to us to be useless because if it once slips it will not pick up again without re-tightening. We do not know whether it was intended to prevent the rotor being damaged in the case of ice in the pump, but as adjusted by the Works at present it certainly does not do this because we have smashed two or three rotors recently. We suggest that this is deleted. A refinement to the spring loaded gland is the adjustment of which we send you particulars. We find that glands will leak very soon if the shafts runs a little bit out of truth. This should not occur as the faces on the crankcase are all machined with the same operation, but if a water pump gets changed about, the trouble sometimes comes up if the serrations are not made slack enough to produce the required universal effect. We think that a 45° thrust washer cadmium plated behind the rotor would contd :- | ||
