contd :- -4- heated system after the same time, but it soon assumes a constant value of 95°C, while the other still continues to rise rapidly. The temperature figures given on these curves are expected to be much higher than those in practice, when the charge will be rapidly taking up all available heat. All the warming up tests were made at a speed of 1000 r.p.m. with the engine running light. A test was made in which the hot spot jacket was empty at the start and only the boiler was full of water. By this means it was thought that perhaps the initial time lag would be reduced but it was found to exert no appreciable influence. We are now reducing the capacity of the boiler in the endeavour to lessen the initial time lag. The present boiler is one foot long and holds .56 lbs. water. HEAT ADDED TO THE ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM. The heat added to the cooling system was obtained for various size water feed holes to see if it was appreciable and to what extent it was reduced by limiting the size of the feed hole as is desirable for quick warming up. A speed of 2000 r.p.m. full throttle was selected and results were obtained by passing the surplus steam and condensed water issuing from the hot spot through a calorimiter.
