To R.{Sir Henry Royce} From EH. c. to CJ. c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to DY.{F R Danby} c. to EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} RE - BENZOLE MIXTURES FOR CAR. We find that the mixture of 80% petrol and 20% benzole effectively cures all detonations on our cars. This is the case even with the old type cars with the magnetos firing the pockets. The advantage gained by using a mixture of benzole and petrol instead of all benzole is as follows:- (1) The smell of the exhaust is not nearly so offensive. One has a job to distinguish in the exhaust any smell of benzole. (2) There is no danger of freezing. We find there is a variation in benzole bought from different Firms, for instance, one batch we had froze solid when left in the yard at a temperature of zero centigrade, whereas some more from another Firm did not freeze two or three degrees below zero centigrade. (3) With a 20% mixture there is no need to alter the carburetter adjustment. It may be necessary to run one notch stronger but can be obtained easily on the mixture control. (4) There is no need to alter the level of the petrol in the float chamber. With a 20% mixture it is possible to get a better consumption than with petrol because full advantage can be taken of the ignition range.
