EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT REPORT.
REFERENCE:- Lr{Mr Ellor}/HWS./SGL.4/GB.7.3.39.
Subject of Report:- Oscillograph work on chassis ignition coils.
General Conclusion:-
Oscillograph records have been taken with the ignition rig in the chassis electrical laboratory to show the effect of different distributors on the primary and secondary current and voltage curves of an ignition coil. In the secondary curves it is noticeable that the current with both distributors is about the same but the voltage appears to be higher with the Rolls-Royce distributor. There is also no appreciable difference in the curves produced with and without suppressors on the plug leads.
The primary curves show the effect of the different make and break ratios and also point and cam bounce at 'A' and 'B' on the curve with the Delco distributor.
It is proposed to make a more accurate measurement of the secondary voltage by disconnecting the amplifier panel and using the cathode ray tube purely as an electrostatic voltmeter.
Further experiments would be made to show the effect of the ignition fitted with suppressors on a wireless receiving set working on television and broadcast wavelengths.
